The Bitossi family has a documented history dating back to
the 14th century in an area just a few kilometers outside of
Florence.

Throughout the centuries, members of the family have
worked as kilnsmen, sculptors, painters, and, most notably,
ceramicists. Their contributions to the ceramic arts industry
have been impactful, particularly during the early decades of
the 20th century, when they introduced unique and innovative
stylistic and formal techniques.

Guido Bitossi, heir
to a long dynasty and tradition, founded the Guido Bitossi
Maioliche artistiche manufactory in Montelupo Fiorentino
in 1921. Their production is linked to tradition and classical
styles of the past, with meticulous attention to refinement
and design. The direction of the factory shifted towards a
modern perspective from the early 1950s, under the artistic
direction of Aldo Londi, a man of innate creativity and
aesthetic sense. Londi joined Bitossi in 1946 and became the
leading figure in product style for over five decades, initially
as a painter, then as artistic director, and finally as an unwavering
experimenter.

Over the years, many designers have contributed to Bitossi’s
production, resulting in the creation of new collections. Particularly
notable is the architect Ettore Sottsass, who established
a long-lasting partnership with Bitossi in 1955. This
collaboration marked the start of a productive relationship
between Sottsass and Londi that focused on experimenting
with modern ceramic products. Sottsass’s designs opened a
new chapter in the history of Italian design.

Bitossi Ceramiche, located in its historic headquarters, is led
today by Ginevra Bocini, the fourth generation of the Bitossi
family.
